Good question and one that many have asked . You see we have been one of the best-kept secrets in the state of South Carolina for several years. But now the word is out. Lake Keowee is a young lake , it was only filled in 1972. It has water that is so clear many have called it the Lake Tahoe of the East. Over the years I have had an opportunity to sail on most of the lakes in the southeast and I can say without pretence that Keowee is truly the greatest. Nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Keowee has views to please the eye and relax the mind. The Cherokees called this mountain range The Great Blue Hills of God. Pioneers trying to cross them may have called them something else. We call them home. Oconee County, is located in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, and is often referred to as the "The Golden Corner of South Carolina." It is almost impossible to enter the county without crossing some body of water. Lake Keowee, Lake Hartwell, The Chauga River and the Chatooga River practically surround us! The primary reason that people move her would have to be the quality of life, the climate, the friendly people and the convenience to medical facilities and shopping. Oh yes we do have this 18,300 acre lake know as Lake Keowee located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. People come to our area form all areas and are surprised that we have a lake that offers such mountain views, clear waters and at the same time not commercialized. If you want commercialization Greenville, SC is only 45 minutes away, Atlanta, GA a couple of hours and Charlotte, NC a little over 2 hours away. Our climate is well suited for outdoor activities as well as comfortable retirement living. Plus we truly do have four perfect distinct but mild seasons. The climate in the area is temperate with a mean annual temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit while the average July temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The average relative humidity daily is 78% at 1:00 a.m.; 82% at 7:00 a.m.; 54% at 1:00 p.m.; 64% at 7:00 p.m. The mean annual precipitation in the area is 47.54 inches and the average growing season is 208 days. …………..Perry Rogers |
